Statistics Norway (SSB) shows that gold for 1500 million NOK (190 million USD) was exported from Norway in 2011 and gold for 1900 million NOK (240 million USD) was exported from Norway in 2012. Quite a lot of gold for a country which does not produce any gold.
The import figures for the precious metal were 9,8 million NOK (1,2 million USD) for 2011 and 26 million NOK (3.3 million USD) for 2012. In other words… Where does the export-gold come from? Certainly, a small amount of the gold is scrap gold, but the head of Customs can not/will not explain where most of the exported gold comes from.
The Riddle The most obvious answer to the riddle is hidden n Norway’s import rules for gold bullion coins. Bullion coins can be imported, without the 25 % sales tax almost all other commodities are subjected to. Furthermore, the established national and international gold companies do not have to register the amount of bullion coins they are importing and selling tax free over the counter.
